Outside of one specific callback moment, Mafia II was a sore disappointment — it wouldn’t take very much to surpass it. I don’t know what to make of Mafia III but I’m glad it’s in the hands of a newish developer and taken to a whole new direction. I won’t be picking it up any time soon but I have my eye on it and hope it delivers on its ambitions.

I love the Ace Attorney series. It’s by far and away my favorite graphic novel/adventure game series and I’m so happy to see the next instalment, Spirit of Justice, make its way to North America. Unfortunately, I’m rather picky the platform of choice. Because of the excellent Dual Destinies iOS port, I’ve decided to wait for the game to make its inevitable transition the App Store. I may check out the 3DS eShop demo in the meantime.

Diablo x Marvel Super Heroes sounds like a great idea. The newly released Marvel Ultimate Alliance 1 & 2 ports for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC sounds like a good opportunity to check out those games. Unfortunately, that high price tag and the fact that they’re less than stellar ports efforts make it a tough impulse buy. Maybe I’ll check them out once it hits bargain bin prices.

After witnessing Doom’s outstanding reception, I think it’s safe to say that Bethesda knows a thing or two about handling id Software’s classic franchises. I’ve heard nothing but glowing impressions of Doom and I look forward to picking it up later this year when it hits a more reasonable price. Playing Doom with a controller will be a little weird but I played the Doom I & II with a keyboard and no music so it could be worse. I haven’t revisited Doom III but I recall enjoying it more than Half-Life 2 which may sound blasphemous to some people but I’m going to stand by it. At least Doom didn’t have a nauseatingly long hovercraft section.

I don’t blame anyone who mixes up Battleborn, Paragon, Gigantic, Lawbreakers and Overwatch. Which is a MOBA? Which is free to play? There are a lot of non-military themed shooters debuting in the next year or so which makes me wonder how many of these will still be relevant a year after its release. The only one I’m remotely interested in is Overwatch. Blizzard’s class based shooter in the vein of Team Fortress 2 looks like it’s right up my alley and they’re doing a great job with those animated shorts. I didn’t stick with Team Fortress 2 but I’m willing to give Blizzard’s take a try.

I’m a big fan of Remedy’s work. I loved their Max Payne and Alan Wake games despite their flaws. There’s a charm to them that entices me to gloss over those flaws. Remedy have yet to disappoint me which was why I was willing to take the plunge with Quantum Break. It involves time, bullets and has live action cutscenes — the key ingredients of a Remedy title. How can it go wrong?

After trying the Superhot prototype, I knew this had potential. A stylish and unique blend of action and puzzle solving that we’ve never seen before in a first person shooter made it a must play. That prototype was a couple of years ago and now the final game is out. I don’t have time for it right now but as soon as it goes on sale, I’ll be there. In the meantime, I’ll just keep muttering “SUPERHOT” over and over again.

We all know what this game is right? It’s a first person adventure title from talent filled indie developer, Campo Santo. The two big names behind Telltale’s The Walking Dead first season founded the studio. They nabbed Olly Moss for the beautiful art and Chris Remo (Gone Home) to lend his musical touch. I’m not going to wade into this one at launch but I have high hopes for it.

With Life is Strange done (fantastic experience, by the way), I think I’ll spend some time with Ori and the Blind Forest. A Metroidvania with challenging platforming sounds very promising.
