Patapon was one of my favorite PlayStation Portable titles. It was charming, unique, and surprisingly addictive. Pon-Pon-Pata-Pon. While I think it would look brilliant on a 4K display, a game like this would be better suited for the likes of the PlayStation Vita or the Nintendo Switch. I just wouldn’t feel right otherwise.

Tekken 7 looks like a quality entry in the long running Namco fighter. I’m especially impressed with the visuals compared to Capcom’s efforts with Street Fighter V. Akuma looks positively vicious in Tekken 7 whereas his Street Fighter V incarnation leaves a lot to be desired. I’m not a huge Tekken fan but I really enjoyed my time with Tekken 5. With that in mind, I doubt I would be be picking up Tekken 7 any time soon. However, I’m still very happy to see another quality Japanese title emerge this year. It’s been a hell of a year for Japan.

Mario Kart 8 is my favorite Mario Kart game. I’ve tried the original on SNES, I’ve sat around old CRTs with Mario Kart 64 and I’ve dabbled with Mario Kart Wii but none of them grabbed me quite like Mario Kart 8 for Wii U. Needless to say, it was easy for me to trade-in my Wii U copy for the Switch version. Having a portable version of my favorite Mario Kart title seems like it’s a shoe-in. It may not have significant visual or technical improvements over Wii U version but all the little additions and refinements make it worthwhile for me. I’m genuinely curious how it will fare on the Joy Cons.

Persona 5 is nearly upon us and that’s a wonderful thing. I enjoyed Persona 3 and absolutely loved Persona 4. I bought a PS Vita just so my bro could play Persona 4: Golden — that’s how much I loved it and wanted him to enjoy it. How do you follow up Persona 4? How do you create a follow up to a game that spawned so many spin-offs and generated so many fans? I have no idea but I am intensely curious. I’m just about done with Yakuza 0 but instead of jumping from one epic Japanese game to another, I’m going to take a small break with Nier: Automata. Vinny is totally right: There’s never been a better time to be playing video games.

It’s amazing how quickly we went from announcement to launch with the Nintendo Switch. I have one pre-ordered but I don’t have that Switch fever that many across the globe seem to have. I can wait a couple of weeks for my stuff to arrive. It’s good to see The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild receive so much praise as well. Nintendo needs a strong launch game like this and it looks like we’re getting one. Will it be enough to convince people to drop $399.99 to play it? We shall see.

Team Ninja’s Ni Oh sounds like my kind of jam. I should have taken opportunities to try it for myself but for one reason or another, I never found the time to try one of their many limited time betas. It sounds brutal but fair and unlike other games in this vein, they gave the user the ability to choose between favoring performance (60 FPS) or image quality (30 FPS) on both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 4 Pro. Allowing users to focus on gameplay and performance is a very appealing feature that I wished From Software offered. The notion that From Software values gameplay so highly when their games frequently stumble down below 30 FPS on consoles was always baffling to me. Unfortunately, like with the numerous betas, I have other games lined up and probably won’t be getting around to it any time soon.

I don’t know what my top 10 games of 2016 looks like yet but I already know that Overwatch is my game of the year. Despite enjoying Valve’s Team Fortress 2, I bounced off it rather quickly and didn’t think those types of games had the staying power that I wanted. I was skeptical of Overwatch at first and it took a lot of good impressions to convince me to check it out. I ended up loving it, investing many hours into the game. It even broke a lot of new ground for me by being the first multiplayer shooter to entice me to use a mic with strangers and the first to employ a competitive mode that I wanted to excel in. Equally remarkable is the fact that I’m still playing it 6 months after release and continuing to learn nuances and tricks. On top of that, Blizzard have been running seasonal events, offered free maps and characters. It’s honestly one of the few games that keeps on giving.

The arrival of Final Fantasy XV in my mailbox yesterday marked the end of a couple of eras. First, it marked the end of Square Enix’s beleagured Final Fantasy project. It started life as Final Fantasy Versus XIII in 2006 and was reincarnated as Final Fantasy XV in 2013. I didn’t pre-order it when it was known as Versus XIII but as soon as it was renamed into a mainline entry, I took advantage of FutureShop’s E3 promotion. The arrival of my PlayStation 4 copy of the game severed the final tie I had to the FutureShop brand. For three years, I was notified of the game’s pending arrival and now those notifications will cease. I think I’m going to miss those.

In-between the Goliath sized shooters sits another revision of BlazBlue. I’ve yet to play a single BlazBlue title and Central Fiction isn’t going to change that but I respect Arc System Works for marching forward and doing their thing. They’re flashy and stylish looking games but I just don’t have it in me to learn all their systems — especially when I can’t even fully grasp the basics of Capcom’s fighters.
