There’s a Just Cause 4? This seemingly just snuck up on me. I was aware of its existence but its arrival seems muted with its lack of fanfare from anyone. I heard the last game was a disappointment for fans. I wouldn’t know because these games always seemed a bit too one note for me.

I was hesitant to pick up Pokemon Let’s Go. I didn’t finish Pokemon Sun and the idea of playing the remake with Pokemon Go mechanics seemed questionable. However, I decided to pick it up anyways and it looks like it was a solid choice. I hear good things.

Black Friday 2010 – 2017 Retrospective

Does this sound familiar?

“Worst Black Friday ever.”

“Last year’s deals were better.”

It’s that time again to look back and see how Black Friday of yesteryear compared to years prior. I plucked deals from 2010-17 and tried to pick popular titles with wide availability.

The Annual Franchises*

After a Watch_Dogs break in 2016, Assassin’s Creed returned with Assassin’s Creed: Origins in 2017. The return of Assassin’s Creed also marked the return of the $50 sale price during Black Friday.

Call of Duty: WW2 continued to the pattern of knocking $30 off the MSRP.

Other Releases

Discounts remained relatively unchanged across recent and older releases. If you’re in the market for third party releases, expect sizable discounts during Black Friday. As for first party? That can be tricky.

The Lessons Learned

  1. You should not be paying full price for Call of Duty or Assassin’s Creed titles; they often receive discounts on Black Friday.
  2. Some recent releases around Black Friday will drop to $49.99 or lower
  3. You will see Q3 releases drop to $39.99
  4. Expect some first half releases to drop to $19.99
  5. Year old titles will also occupy the $19.99 price range
  6. The weakened Canadian dollar caused MSRP to rise but the discounts didn’t deepen to compensate.

A Reminder

Black Friday isn’t meant for “full time” bargain hunters; it’s for the masses who don’t keep tabs on the latest deals or did not get a chance to use the usual E3 pre-order discounts.

There was a time where a new Battlefield game would have excited me but ever since EA and DICE moved the series back to WWI and WWII, I’ve largely ignored the game. Part of it is the setting but a lot of it has to do with these titles’ performance on the PlayStation 4 Pro. I find it very jarring to move from a rock solid 60 FPS of Overwatch back to the iffy performance of a Battlefield game. At this rate, I’ll be picking up a new Battlefield game once the PlayStation 5 releases.

Tetris Effect looks absolutely amazing and I would love to experience it in VR. I don’t think I will be playing it that way any time soon though. I don’t know a soul who owns a PSVR headset and I won’t be owning one until I see the headset for less than $199.

The lord of terror’s third adventure makes its way to another platform. Portable Diablo III sounds very enticing and I hope it holds up well on the performance front. I doubt I’ll pick up this version of the game but I’m very glad Blizzard ported it over.

P.S – Still on vacation for another week. Expect delays and infrequent updates here and other the social media feeds. Apologies for the inconvenience!

I was wondering why I didn’t pre-order Red Dead Redemption II. I liked Red Dead Redemption on the Xbox 360. I have the most powerful console and the best way to play Red Dead Redemption II today. So why didn’t I do it? Two reasons. 1.) I own a copy of Spider-man and still have yet to play it and 2.) I wanted to wait for the inevitable PC version. The latter was due to my lack of faith in Rockstar’s technical prowess. I didn’t think they would be able to deliver a 4K resolution game at a smooth 30 FPS. Apparently, I was wrong and they managed to pull off a strong performance on the Xbox One X. With that in mind, I’ll pick up a copy if it hits $50 again.

Between the two Namco Bandai 3D fighters, I lean towards SoulCalibur. The last SoulCalibur I played was SoulCalibur IV and before that it was the original DreamCast release. I would like to give SoulCalibur VI a try but not for $80. I don’t love it that much and I doubt I would wring out that much enjoyment from it. I would likely invest more time in the custom character creator than the game itself. I didn’t mind the silly Star Wars inclusions in IV but the inclusion of Geralt from the Witcher series is a standout choice right up there with Link from SoulCalibur II.

Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII’ Blackout mode wasn’t bad. I don’t know if I would buy Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII for that mode alone but the beta convinced me that Treyarch knows a thing or two about battle royale. It won’t reach the heights of Fortnite but I would be very curious how well it will do in the console space where PUBG runs poorly and is exclusive to just the Xbox One. I’m very curious — not enough to buy Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII for $79.99 — but I am curious.

Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey is out for the plebs who only want the standard version of games. I personally don’t know anyone going out of their way to pay more for the earlier access but this practice must be working because publishers keep doing this. Regardless, I won’t be surprised to hear this year’s game sells well. A lot of people enjoyed the hell out of Assassin’s Creed: Origins. I have zero desire to give that a go but I have a morsel of intrigue with this year’s Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey. As a fan of God of War and ancient Greece, I find this year’s game more palpable. Will I actually go out of my way to play it? Doubtful.
