Week of Apr 24 – 30 Round-up

This week’s image is from Broken Age. Act 2 is set to debut on April 28 on PC, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita. It was the first Kickstarter projects that I backed and I’ve been happy with what they’ve delivered thus far. The first act was pleasant and left me wanting more which cannot be said for that other Kickstarter project that I backed. Republique was not my thing whatsoever.

A Couple of Reminders

Week of Apr 17 – 23 Round-up

This week’s image is from Grand Theft Auto V which debuted this past Tuesday on PC. I hear it’s a pretty good port. I played on the PlayStation 4 and enjoyed it there so I can only imagine the PC version would be extra wonderful at 60 FPS.

Not much to share this week. If applicable to your corner of the nation, enjoy the warm weather!

Week of Apr 10 – 16 Round-up

This week’s image is from Mortal Kombat X which debut’s next week. I loved Mortal Kombat 9 for its wonderful campaign. I hoped more companies would take inspiration from that game and include robust campaigns of their own but that was not the case at all. Despite my love for the last game, I’m not picking up Mortal Kombat X on day one. I’m going to wait for the inevitable “Komplete” edition. I’m not big on the competitive fighting game scene, so I don’t feel like I’m missing out.

Trying Some Ads

I’ve been trying some Google Ad banners on the site over the last few days but I’m trying to be smart about it. I’m not a fan of ads and I certainly don’t need to include them at this time but I figured it’s an interesting thing to play around with. If I get to make a few pennies along the way, that would be sweet as well.

I originally included a banner ad just below the GameDealsCanada logo but I felt ads stuck out like a sore thumb there. So at this moment, the sole active ad is the one you see at the bottom of each page. I figured once you’re done checking out the deals, something may catch your eye in an ad. Or not.

Hopefully these ads aren’t intrusive. If they are, please report them to me and I’ll see if I can do something about it.

Week of Apr 3 – 8 Round-up

This week’s image is from Bastion. It was fantastic and the upcoming PlayStation 4 release will undoubtedly be fantastic as well. If you haven’t played before, I highly recommend it. Maybe not at the $14.99 asking price though.

Goodbye FutureShop

That was weird wasn’t? Suddenly — on a Saturday no less — FutureShop ceased to exist. Just over three months into 2015 and we already lost Target Canada and FutureShop. I can’t help but wonder what the next big box retail store will go.

I preferred shopping at BestBuy because of the RewardZone points but always chose to pre-order my games from FutureShop during E3 time because I preferred the cash discount instead of the cumbersome RewardZone gift certificates.

Outside of the reasons that I outlined, did anyone actually have a preference for FutureShop over BestBuy? Or vice versa?

Week of Mar 27 – Apr 2 Round-up

Check out the wet butt of this Aston Martin Vantage. It’s from upcoming driving simulator, Project Cars. I have no intention on picking it up (primarily because I don’t know much about it) but I wanted to use it in order to segue into this beautiful Top Gear video. Pour one out for the controversial BBC show. I’ll miss it.

A Good Time To Pick Up Consoles?

The console hardware promotions have been popping up frequently over the last couple of weeks. Microsoft and retailers were offering free game and discounts on numerous bundles throughout the March break. Sony’s PlayStation 4 offered numerous free games but we haven’t seen a straight slashing until this week. This is the first discount on PlayStation 4 consoles in 2015 but the sad reality is: they merely cut the price down to launch prices.

Microsoft’s Xbox One features more aggressive promotions, yesterday FutureShop was offering $50 off Xbox One Assassin’s Creed console bundles and included a $50 Xbox Live! card. If you missed that, the Microsoft Store is offering its own $50 discount along with a free controller.

If you’re itching to join the latest generation, it’s not a terrible time to pick up a console. I hear that Bloodborne is pretty rad.

Week of Mar 20 – 26 Round-up

This week’s image is from the upcoming game, Bloodborne. I skipped Dark Souls II but I’ll be there on day one for Bloodborne. I sincerely hope the technical issues are virtually non-existent. But considering From Software’s history with the Souls series, I’m keeping expectations in check.

$79.99 games are a reality

It was just a few weeks ago when we were all staring blankly at $74.99 price tags. And now we’re seeing titles like Omega Quintet and Disgaea 5 priced at $79.99 at EB Games.

Disgaea 5 - 80 MSRP Omega Quintet - 80 MSRP

I’m not disgusted. I’m actually amused with the fact that publishers and retailers have the balls to price these titles so high. They believe people will actually pay and I bet some will. Hopefully only the 15 or so people who have already rated those games 4/5 stars on EB Games site will actually do so. Everyone else should vote with their wallets and wait for lower price points.

Remember $59.99? Those were good times.

Week of Mar 13 – 19 Round-up

This week’s image is from the upcoming game, Battlefield: Hardline. I’m a fan of Battlefield and its shenanigans but I wasn’t keen on what I saw of Hardline. I’m also perfectly content with Battlefield 4 which just received a large patch that brought it up to par. Let’s hope the next Battlefield they announce is either Battlefield 5 or another Bad Company.

There’s not much news this week but there are plenty of deals — especially if you’re looking into picking up an Xbox One. I’d personally take advantage of the Amazon.ca offer with the $50 credit but I already own an Xbox One. I’m also ashamed to admit that I have yet to play a single game on it.

I own a copy of Sunset Overdrive and I will eventually play it, I just feel bad for treating it like my neglected PS Vita. If you think a backlog of games is bad, how about a backlog of consoles?

Week of Mar 6 – 12 Round-up

This week’s image is from Wolfenstein: The New Order which will receive a standalone prequel for about $20 in May. I have a copy of this sitting on my PlayStation 4 and will finally give it a go after hearing nothing but praise for it.

Save 30-50% off on everything* @ Target

If you haven’t heard, you can save 30-50% off just about everything in Target. Not much is left so don’t get your hopes up. I haven’t bothered stepping foot in a Target since the closure announcement. In fact, I don’t personally know anyone who did.

Did you go? Was it worth your while? Feel free to share.

Week of Feb 27 – Mar 5 Round-up

This week’s image is from Limbo which gets a re-release on PlayStation 4 earlier this week. It’s one of my favorite XBLA releases and certainly a classic of the the last generation in my books. I highly recommend it if you haven’t played it before.

Please Welcome 2015’s Newest MSRP: $74.99

If you haven’t heard, a large number of upcoming releases are now listed at $74.99 across all major retailers including Amazon.ca, BestBuy, EB Games and FutureShop.

It was just last year that we moved from $59.99 to $69.99 and I’m still not used to seeing that $69.99 price tag on games.

How will this affect your purchasing decisions? For me, it means I’ll be waiting a little longer for games to hit my price point. The annual E3 promotions by retailers like Amazon.ca, BestBuy and Futureshop will help ease the pain on “must have on day one” titles but the usual 33% discount off a $74.99 MSRP results in a $50.24 price tag.

That was a $10 discount two years ago.

And if you thought last year’s Black Friday and Boxing Day promotions were dire, I suggest you brace yourself for the worst.

Week of Feb 20 – 26 Round-up

This week’s image is from Snow. It’s a free-to-play, open world, winter sports game powered by CryEngine 3. It’s an unorthodox combination ideas that does its namesake justice.

Slighty Deeper Discounts at Target

Target is offering 20 – 40% off items with video games and consoles receiving a 20% discount. I haven’t gone to check out what’s available but I cannot imagine it being very much.

Feel free to share what you’ve managed to pick up from your local Target. I’m curious.
