Week of Oct 26 – Nov 1 Round-up

I was wondering why I didn’t pre-order Red Dead Redemption II. I liked Red Dead Redemption on the Xbox 360. I have the most powerful console and the best way to play Red Dead Redemption II today. So why didn’t I do it? Two reasons. 1.) I own a copy of Spider-man and still have yet to play it and 2.) I wanted to wait for the inevitable PC version. The latter was due to my lack of faith in Rockstar’s technical prowess. I didn’t think they would be able to deliver a 4K resolution game at a smooth 30 FPS. Apparently, I was wrong and they managed to pull off a strong performance on the Xbox One X. With that in mind, I’ll pick up a copy if it hits $50 again.

Between the two Namco Bandai 3D fighters, I lean towards SoulCalibur. The last SoulCalibur I played was SoulCalibur IV and before that it was the original DreamCast release. I would like to give SoulCalibur VI a try but not for $80. I don’t love it that much and I doubt I would wring out that much enjoyment from it. I would likely invest more time in the custom character creator than the game itself. I didn’t mind the silly Star Wars inclusions in IV but the inclusion of Geralt from the Witcher series is a standout choice right up there with Link from SoulCalibur II.

Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII’ Blackout mode wasn’t bad. I don’t know if I would buy Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII for that mode alone but the beta convinced me that Treyarch knows a thing or two about battle royale. It won’t reach the heights of Fortnite but I would be very curious how well it will do in the console space where PUBG runs poorly and is exclusive to just the Xbox One. I’m very curious — not enough to buy Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII for $79.99 — but I am curious.

Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey is out for the plebs who only want the standard version of games. I personally don’t know anyone going out of their way to pay more for the earlier access but this practice must be working because publishers keep doing this. Regardless, I won’t be surprised to hear this year’s game sells well. A lot of people enjoyed the hell out of Assassin’s Creed: Origins. I have zero desire to give that a go but I have a morsel of intrigue with this year’s Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey. As a fan of God of War and ancient Greece, I find this year’s game more palpable. Will I actually go out of my way to play it? Doubtful.

This is it, right? I’m going to finally play a Forza Horizon game with Forza Horizon 4. Hearing about the 1080p 60 FPS mode for the Xbox One X fascinates me considering this franchises’ pedigree as a 30 FPS title. I haven’t dug into a racing title in a long, long time and this Xbox Game Pass title makes it a very compelling case for me to return to one.

I am a Final Fight guy. I grew up with the SNES copy of Final Fight. I had no idea it was originally an arcade title or the fact that it had 2 player co-op. My brother and I took turns punching Mad Gear punks throughout Metro City. My experience with the likes of Captain Commando and Knights of the Round were experienced through CPS1 and CPS2 emulators so it’s nice to have the opportunity to own arcade perfect ports of them.

While Tomb Raider fans are busy discovering what’s new and exciting in Shadow of the Tomb Raider, I just got around to starting Rise of the Tomb Raider on Xbox One courtesy of Xbox Game Pass. So far? I’m enjoying it but I’m have a tough time grasping her motivation for finding the tomb of the Prophet. Is it really just because her dad was looking for it?

I will play Dragon Quest XI. I’m making that pledge despite not finishing Dragon Quest VIII on the 3DS or Square Enix’ other JRPG epic, Final Fantasy XV. It just doesn’t look charming like all Dragon Quest titles, it also looks technically impressive. I’ve only played Dragon Quest titles on a portable which made the choice between Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation 4 though. Unfortunately, Square Enix decided not to bring over the Nintendo 3DS version to western shores so I was left with the PlayStation 4 version by default. Then a PC version was announced and now a Switch version. I don’t know which version I will end up getting but the bottom line is this: I will play Dragon Quest XI.

Here comes the friendly neighbourhood Spider-man doing what Spidey does — or at least that’s the hope? I hope this doesn’t end up being a reskinned Batman: Arkham title. I love Rock Steady’s titles but I want them to make their games and not have other studios borrow from their formula too much. I hope Insomniac Games’ ends up carving out their own niche with this one. I didn’t watch many gameplay videos so pardon my ignorance if I’m completely off base here.

Yakuza 2 was my first Yakuza title. It made a Yakuza fan out of me but I haven’t revisited it since playing it for the first time on the PlayStation 2. I don’t see myself revisiting the original game in its original form but I will gladly revisit it via this Kiwami 2 remake. I cannot wait to punch a tiger again.
